Home Care - Overview

Home care is any form of assistance provided to seniors or the disabled to enhance their quality of life and help them continue to live independently in their own home. If you, your spouse, a family member or friend need help, a range of options are available.

Historically, most home care services were provided by community, charitable and religious organisations. Today, there are an increasing number of private businesses and many people also offer their services individually, on a freelance basis.

Some services are provided by agreement at commercial rates, or with a charitable subsidy where the service provider is a not-for-profit organisation. Other services are provided on a needs basis in conjunction with government programs and are partly government funded or subsidized.

The government programs that are partly government funded or subsidized are described on the following page (link below) and will generally be offered by home care providers in the first of the above categories. Their listings in our Home Care Directory indicate whether they participate in any such programs.
