A Guide to Home Care in Australia

If you want to remain in your own home, but need help with daily tasks, then a range of services are available to help you do so. Historically, most home care services were provided by community, charitable and religious organisations. Today, these services are also being provided by a growing number of private businesses and many people also offer their services individually, on a freelance basis or through an agency.

There are also a number of programs that are subsidized by the Commonwealth Government. These include the Home and Community Care (HACC) Program and Home Care Packages.

So if you need help, your 3 main choices are to arrange the services that you need:

  1. directly with one or more private service providers (at commercial rates) and/or community, charitable or religious organisations (which may offer a charitable subsidy)
  2. under the Home and Community Care (HACC) Program
  3. through a tailored and coordinated Home Care Package.

To help you find the type of home care services that you are looking for, the listings in our Home Care Directory indicate whether the relevant home care service provider participates in the Home and Community Care (HACC) Program and/or provides Home Care Packages.
