A range of accommodation and care alternatives and combinations are available, some of which involve staying in your own home, while others involve a move to a managed community environment (such as a retirement village for over 55s, manufactured home village for over 50s or rental village for over 50s) or a residential aged care facility (such as a nursing home or hostel, which are now called high level residential aged care and low level residential aged care, respectively).

The cost of the various alternatives and combinations can vary significantly, depending on the standard of accommodation and care selected, need and financial circumstances. Some are provided on commercial terms on a user pays basis, while others incorporate an element of charitable subsidy or government funding. Some are not specifically regulated, while others are regulated by State and Territory or Commonwealth governments. Most are provided by either the private sector or the not-for-profit sector.
